Suicide Squad is a 2016 American action film based on the DC Comics antihero team of the same name. It is the third installment in the DC Extended Universe. The film is written and directed by David Ayer and stars an ensemble cast featuring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood and Cara Delevingne. In Suicide Squad, a secret government agency led by Amanda Waller recruits imprisoned supervillains to execute dangerous black ops missions and save the world from a powerful threat, in exchange for leaner sentences. By February 2009, a Suicide Squad film was in development at Warner Bros. Pictures. Ayer signed on to write and direct in September 2014, and by October, the casting process had begun. Principal photography began on April 13, 2015, in Toronto, Ontario, with additional filming in Chicago, Illinois, and ended in August that year.

Suicide Squad premiered in New York City on August 1, 2016, and was released in the United States on August 5, 2016, in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D. Following a strong debut that set new box office records, the film grossed over $745 million worldwide, making it the 10th highest-grossing film of 2016. It received generally negative reviews from critics, who criticized the plot, directing and characters, though Leto and Robbie's performances received praise.

Plot
In the aftermath of Superman's death, intelligence officer Amanda Waller assembles Task Force X, a team of dangerous criminals imprisoned at Belle Reve Prison consisting of elite hitman Deadshot, former psychiatrist Harley Quinn, pyrokinetic ex-gangster El Diablo, opportunistic thief Captain Boomerang, genetic mutation Killer Croc, and specialized assassin Slipknot. They are placed under command of Colonel Rick Flag to be used as disposable assets in high-risk missions for the United States government. Each member has a nano bomb implanted in their neck, designed to detonate should any member rebel or try to escape.

One of Waller's intended recruits is Flag's girlfriend Dr. June Moone, an archaeologist possessed by a witch-goddess known as the "Enchantress". Enchantress quickly turns on Waller, deciding to eradicate humankind with a mystical weapon for imprisoning her. She besieges Midway City by transforming its populace into a horde of monsters, and summons her brother Incubus to assist her. Waller then deploys the squad to extract a high-profile mark from Midway, which is reported to be under a terrorist attack.

Harley's homicidal lover, the Joker, finds out about her predicament and tortures Belle Reve Security Officer Griggs into leading him to the facility where the nano bombs are made. There, he blackmails one of the program's scientists into disabling Harley's bomb. On approach, the squad's helicopter is shot down, forcing them to proceed on foot to their target. Boomerang inaccurately convinces Slipknot that the bombs are a ruse to keep them in check; Slipknot attempts to escape and Flag kills him via his nano bomb, while the squad is attacked by Enchantress' minions. They eventually manage to fight their way through to a safe room, where they learn that their mark is Waller herself, who is attempting to cover up her involvement in Enchantress' siege.

The squad escorts Waller to a rooftop for extraction, but the arriving helicopter has been hijacked by the Joker and his men, who open fire on the squad while Harley climbs aboard. However, Waller's men shoot down the helicopter, and Harley falls out while the Joker is presumed dead, after which Harley rejoins the squad. Alerted to Waller's whereabouts, Enchantress' minions arrive and kidnap her. Deadshot finds Waller's confidential files and learns the truth about Enchantress. Flag is then forced to confess the truth, causing the squad members to abandon him. With Waller compromised, Flag relieves the squad of the mission, but chooses to continue. Realizing they have an opportunity to prove themselves, they soon rejoin him and locate Enchantress at a partially-flooded subway station. Killer Croc and a group of Navy SEALs, led by Lieutenant GQ Edwards, go underwater to plant a bomb underneath Incubus. El Diablo embraces his abilities and manages to distract Incubus long enough for the bomb to detonate underneath, killing them both as well as Edwards.

The remaining squad members battle Enchantress together, but are ultimately defeated. Enchantress offers to fulfill their deepest desires in exchange for their allegiance, and Harley feigns interest in order to get close enough to cut out Enchantress' heart. Killer Croc then throws explosives into Enchantress' weapon and Deadshot shoots them, destroying the device. Flag takes Enchantress' heart and crushes it, finally freeing June from the curse. Waller, still alive, emerges, and the squad members are returned to Belle Reve with ten years off their sentences. All but Captain Boomerang are allowed special privileges. The Joker, alive and unscathed, breaks into the penitentiary and rescues Harley. In a mid-credits scene, Waller meets with Bruce Wayne, who agrees to protect her from the backlash of Enchantress' rampage in exchange for access to the government's files on the expanding metahuman community.

Cast

Cast of Suicide Squad at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con International. From left to right: Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Scott Eastwood, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Cara Delevingne, and Adam Beach
Will Smith as Floyd Lawton / Deadshot:[4]
An expert marksman and assassin.[5][6] A mercenary by day and a concerned father by night, Deadshot is a conflicted criminal who enjoys the hunt, but is still trying to do right by his young daughter.[7]
Jared Leto as The Joker:
A psychopathic supervillain. Leto described his role as "nearly Shakespearean" and a "beautiful disaster of a character"; about portraying the villain, he stated "I took a pretty deep dive. But this was a unique opportunity and I couldn't imagine doing it another way. It was fun, playing these psychological games. But at the same time it was very painful." Leto never broke character throughout filming, with Smith going as far as stating he never met him. In preparation for the role, Leto spent his time alone, listened to gospel music from the 1920s—commenting he senses "Joker may be much older than people think"—and read literature on shamanism. Influences for the character's appearance include Mexican cartel bosses and the work of Alejandro Jodorowsky.[8] Leto stated that he spoke with doctors and spent time with psychopaths in preparation for his role. The character's tattoos were added by Ayer, who believed it gave a modernized gangster look to the Joker.[9]
Margot Robbie as Harleen Quinzel / Harley Quinn:[10]
A crazed supervillain and former psychiatrist.[5][6] Producer Richard Suckle described the character as "a fan fave. Funny, crazy, scary. ... You can't come up with enough adjectives to describe all the different things you see her do."[11] Robbie described Quinn as one of the Squad's most manipulative members, and her relationship with Joker as "incredibly dysfunctional", adding that Quinn is "mad about him—like, literally, mad. She's crazy. But she loves him. And it's a really unhealthy, dysfunctional relationship. But an addictive one."[12]
Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag:[13]
A West Point graduate and Army Special Forces Colonel who leads the Suicide Squad in the field. He is all business and executes Amanda Waller's orders but does not always agree with her goals or methods.[7] Tom Hardy was previously cast in the role but was forced to drop out because of scheduling conflicts.[6][14]
Viola Davis as Amanda Waller:[15]
The government official who gives out the Squad's orders.[11] Ambitious and devious, she has big plans and intends to let no metahuman or military protocol get in her way.[7] Davis stated she is fascinated by the character, singling out her psychology and strength and describing her as a "powerful black woman, hard, ready to pick up a gun and shoot anyone at will."[16] She described Waller as "relentless in her villainy" and noted that her powers are "her intelligence and her complete lack of guilt."[11] Davis read M.E. Thomas' autobiography Confessions of a Sociopath to prepare for her role.[17]
Jai Courtney as George "Digger" Harkness / Captain Boomerang:[18]
A thief who utilizes deadly boomerangs,[5][6] described as rugged, unpredictable and mouthy.[7] About his role, Courtney stated, "he is an absolute bogan, in the purest sense. David Ayer's first instruction was, 'find your inner shitbag'."[17]
Jay Hernandez as Chato Santana / El Diablo:[14][17]
A former Los Angeles gang member who has powers that allow him to summon flames, and transform himself into a monstrous horned demon-like entity.[17] He has squelched his fire-conjuring powers to a solitary flame as penance for the horrors he inflicted on those he loved.[7] Hernandez set his character apart from his teammates as he "just wants to stay out of the fight", while "most of [the Squad members] are happy to get out there and kill people".[17]
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Waylon Jones / Killer Croc:
A supervillain who suffers from a regressive atavism which caused him to develop reptilian features.[6][19][20] Being a meta-human, he possesses near superhuman strength, high endurance, and the capacity to breath underwater. His skin allows him to withstand high caliber weapons and skin abrasion.[19] Akinnuoye-Agbaje described the character as "a cannibal with rage issues".[11]
Cara Delevingne as June Moone / Enchantress:
An archaeologist who is possessed by an ancient evil force that transforms her into a powerful sorceress.[5][11][17] Unleashed after a long period of imprisonment, the entity draws the attention of Waller.[17] Delevingne described Moone as "an adventure-seeker who’s always wanted some excitement" and Enchantress as "a feral being."[17] Intended to be a recruit for the squad, Enchantress instead seeks revenge against mankind for imprisoning her and her brother's souls in artifacts after years of worshipping them.
Karen Fukuhara as Tatsu Yamashiro / Katana:
An expert martial artist and swordswoman who mourns her husband's death.[6][7][14] She serves as Rick Flag's bodyguard and wields the mystical Soultaker blade, capable of trapping the souls of its victims. As she is a volunteer, not a criminal, she does not have a micro-bomb implant. Fukuhara stated that Katana "has morals and codes. She can also slice through hundreds of people without taking a breath."[17]
Ike Barinholtz as Griggs:[21]
An officer at Belle Reve Special Security Barracks, the black site where the government imprisons the squad.
Scott Eastwood as GQ Edwards:[21]
A Navy SEAL who assists Flag during the squad's mission. Ayer sought out Fury actor Shia LaBeouf for the role, but the studio was not interested in the actor.[22]
Adam Beach as Christopher Weiss / Slipknot:[23]
A mercenary specializing in tactical grappling and scaling, who is the first member of the squad to be killed.

Ben Affleck and Ezra Miller reprise their roles from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as Bruce Wayne / Batman and Barry Allen / Flash, respectively in cameo roles; while Jason Momoa makes a brief photographic appearance as Arthur Curry / Aquaman.[24][25][26] Alain Chanoine portrays Incubus, the brother of Enchantress, who possesses the body of a businessman in Midway City.[27] Jim Parrack and Common appear as the Joker's henchmen Jonny Frost and Monster T, respectively.[17][28] David Harbour and Alex Meraz portray government official Dexter Tolliver and Navy Seal Gomez, respectively.[29][30] Shailyn Pierre-Dixon and Corina Calderon are featured as Zoe Lawton and Grace Santana, Deadshot's daughter and Diablo's wife, respectively.[31][32] David Ayer (writer/director of the film) makes a cameo appearance as a Belle Reve officer in the extended cut.

Sing is a 2016 American 3D computer-animated musical comedy film produced by Illumination Entertainment.[3] It was directed and written by Garth Jennings and co-directed by Christophe Lourdelet.[1] The film stars the voices of Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, Taron Egerton and Tori Kelly and follows animals that enter a singing competition, hosted by a koala hoping to save his theater.

The film includes more than 60 classic songs from famous artists, and also has an original song by Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande called "Faith".[4] It was released by Universal Pictures on December 21, 2016 and has grossed $358 million worldwide.

Plot
In a world of anthropomorphic animals, koala Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) owns a theater, having been interested in show business since his father took him to his first music show as a child. Facing financial troubles, he tells his friend Eddie Noodleman (John C. Reilly) that he will host a singing competition with a prize of $1,000. But Buster's assistant Ms. Crawley mistakenly appends two extra zeroes, and the promotional fliers showing $100,000 are blown out of Buster's office into the city streets.

Animals from all around the city gather for auditions. Those selected include: housewife and mother of 25 piglets Rosita (Reese Witherspoon); street musician mouse Mike (Seth MacFarlane); mobster son gorilla Johnny (Taron Egerton); and punk-rock porcupine Ash (Scarlett Johansson). Shy elephant Meena (Tori Kelly) bombs her audition out of stage fright, while Ash's boyfriend Lance is dismissed from the contest. Rosita is paired with another pig contestant named Gunter for a dancing routine. Although Buster discovers the flyers show a prize of $100,000, money he does not have, he remains optimistic. Buster convinces Eddie to arrange a visit with Eddie's grandmother and former opera singer and theater actress Nana Noodleman to persuade her to sponsor the prize money. She is hesitant to contribute, but agrees to see a private screening of the show.

Encouraged by her grandfather, Meena tries to ask Buster for another chance, but ends up helping him as a stage hand instead. When some of the other acts quit, Meena is added as an act. The performers' individual problems begin to hinder rehearsals. Rosita flounders in her dance routine with Gunter, having been distracted by her parenting duties that have fallen into disarray. After discovering Lance with a new girlfriend, Becky, and evicting them from her apartment, Ash is heartbroken and in no mood to sing her assigned song: the cheery "Call Me Maybe". Johnny is torn between having to help his father as the driver of the getaway car in a heist and making the practices; when he tries to do both, he does not show up for the planned pickup, and his father and his gang are arrested; whereupon his father later shames his son for not wanting to follow his footsteps, disgusted at the notion of him wanting to be a singer. Meena still has stage fright. Mike, assuming the prize money is as good as his, buys a fancy car to impress a girl mouse, and swindles a group of bears in a card game at a nightclub.

The day of the screening, the bears interrupt the show, demanding the money from Mike, who in turn, points to Buster. The bears open the chest containing the prize money, but see a small amount of cash totaling less than a thousand dollars plus items that Buster was planning to sell. The glass tank full of luminescent squids that Buster got to light up the theater breaks from the bears' aggressive actions, and floods the theater, which then comes crashing down. Buster, who had been living in his theater's office desk, takes up residence at Eddie's place (his parents' pool house). Although the contestants visit him and try to cheer him up, Buster is too despondent to listen to them. He tries to start over by opening a car wash, using the same bucket that his dad had used to earn money for Buster's theater.

When Meena goes to the theater's rubble lot and sings Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah", Buster hears her and is inspired to reinstate the show without the prize money. They perform in front of Rosita and Meena's family members. As Rosita and Gunther perform "Shake It Off", more animals are attracted to the scene as the show is broadcast on the news. Johnny's rendition of "I'm Still Standing" impresses his father, who then escapes from prison to reconcile with him. Ash sings her original rock song, "Set It All Free", impressing Lance. Mike, who bailed out when he heard there was no prize money, returns when his peers make fun that he wasn't able to sing like the ones on TV, singing "My Way", which later makes them cry. Meena finally overcomes her fears and sings Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry 'bout a Thing" The show becomes a success and impresses Nana, who was in the audience. Nana buys the lot, and the theater is rebuilt and reopened.
